| In order to explore the relationship among religion, withdrawal and political engagement in Latin America, I test the withdrawal hypothesis, which predicts that time devoted to the church takes time away from politics. I analyze 24 countries surveyed by the 2010 Americas Barometer, in which I study the impact of church attendance, attendance to religious groups, importance of religion, trust in the church, and the Catholic Church presence at the subnational level, employing data from the 2005 Pontifical Yearbook. I find evidence that supports the withdrawal hypothesis among church goers and those who trust in the church, and an increasing presence of the Church also tends to favor withdrawal, whereas political engagement increases among those who attend to church groups. Al explorar la relación entre religión, evasión e involucramiento en América Latina, se verifica la hipótesis de evasión que predice que el tiempo dedicado a la Iglesia disminuye el tiempo dedicado a la política. Se analizan 24 países encuestados por el Barómetro de las Américas en 2010, donde se estudian la asistencia a servicios religiosos, a grupos de la Iglesia, importancia de la religión, confianza en las iglesias y la presencia de la Iglesia católica a escala subnacional con datos del Anuario Pontificio de 2005. Se halla evidencia en favor de la hipótesis de evasión entre quienes asisten al culto y donde existe una mayor presencia de la Iglesia católica, mientras que el involucramiento aumenta entre quienes asisten a grupos de la Iglesia. | |
